Air Leak Test

Thursday, March 12, 2009

Powys County Council appointed HRS Services to carry out comprehensive air tightness, air leak tests, smoke and thermographic testing on a school to ascertain the extent and cause of drafting problems.

Powys County Council needed to understand the full picture of why a school was draughty and cold so we had to carry out air leak tests to see where they were actually coming from. They knew from their own investigations that air leakage was a problem. However, their objective was to identify where and how air leakage occurred and whether other factors played a part, such as, in terms of design issues, poor standards of construction and lack of insulation.

On a cold, overcast day in February, HRS Services turned up on-site with the full range of air tightness testing equipment. Air leak tests and smoke tests were carried out on the whole building. Subsequently, a thermographic survey of the external envelope and a detailed visual inspection were carried out. The complete report was made available to Powys County Council on CD with a summary of where the problems were located and their extent.

A full range of air leak tests can be carried out to ISO 9001:2000 standards. Whether it's in the laboratory or is related to the largest buildings, HRS has the capability and resource to carry out air tightness testing work. Air tightness (permeability) tests can be carried out on components or materials on-site or in the laboratory to either establish or confirm the actual air permeability quoted by suppliers. This can be particularly useful for block work, vents, curtain walling, components and joints, etc.

Air tightness (leakage) tests can be carried out on ducts, plenums, computer/clean rooms and buildings with floor areas of 10m² up to the largest distribution sheds or even office blocks the size of Canary Wharf! HRS uses three different types of calibrated fan depending on the flow rate required:
